Webhosting - What is a Web Server & How Do You Find The Right One?

By Ricardo Daryans

What is a web server? Basically, a web server embodies the theory of supply and demand: it supplies your website when the people demand it. When a user wants to view your website, the server finds the URL's file and uploads it to the user's browser. However, there are many different kinds of servers to choose from, so how do you find the right one?

The larger businesses will appreciate, undoubtedly, the concept of a virtual private server for webhosting. These servers are more expensive, but they contain only a few other users. A virtual private server allows you to adjust the settings as you see fit, so long as you are willing to learn. For those worried about security, the VPS is definitely the way to go.

The more popular server is Virtual Hosting. This is a single server that is shared with many users. Because it's controlled by an administrator, you don't need to worry about technical skills. However, you don't have as much control as you would with a Virtual Private Server, because every time you want to change something in your settings, you have to contact the admininstrator. Secondly, you're only allowed one website, so if you want to start a second site, you have to create a new account. The good news is, it's a great deal at only about 20 to 50 dollars per month. So if you have a small business with just one or two websites, and you don't want to worry about technical skills , Virtual Hosting is the best choice.

You also have to think about web server software. One type is Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS). It only works with NT-based server systems, as NT is a Microsoft product. It has crash protection and plenty of support, so you don't have to worry about viruses. Also, if you use NT, you get IIS free with it.

Apache is the other choice, and it is the most popular. While it does not have a ton of support, it is free, and it is extremely easy to set up. IIS is still the safe choice, but Apache definitely has more features.

We have only given you a few of the available options, but this is an excellent start. Do a bit of your own research and you will have a better idea of what is available. Before you know it, you will be able to choose the best host and have the best website for your company.

Downsides of Using Free Web Hosting

By Jerry Long

If you're just beginning a business by yourself you probably don't have a large amount of capital to spend on marketing and setting up a site. For many , the idea of free web hosting seems like a good way to save money while gaining a working internet site to join with future customers. Unfortunately, most firms will gain nothing from this free hosting and even lose possible clients in the procedure. Here's a look at the many downsides of choosing a free hosting supplier for your website design miami.

To begin with, your internet site will be covered with advertisements, as the hosting supplier needs to be paid in some form to offer your internet site to the general public. These advertisements are distracting to say the least and may detract business away from you. They can also clash with your site and create mess ups when their placement is off. Most importantly, these advertisements throughout your website will utterly destroy your credibility with future customers and make your business appear amateurish.

The next consideration is trustworthiness. A domain using a free hosting provider won't have a warranty of accessibility and is basically one of the biggest differences between paid and free hosting. There's no guarantee of uptime, and there will be no support if you encounter issues.

Free hosting also means extremely limited space for storing. With a paid hosting provider, you gain not only support and warranted uptime but an enormous amount of space and the ability to upgrade to a better package as your enterprise expands. There are also other points to consider, for example the memorable website address you gain with a paid hosting supplier. Internet sites hosted by a free provider are also likely to be ignored by search sites, meaning few folk will even see your internet site.

Remember, your business internet site should be professional, accessible and user-friendly, above all else. Selecting a free hosting supplier means turning away possible clients at the door and leaving cash on the table. Because you get what you pay for, a free hosting supplier should not be used for a professional web site that generates earnings.

By Martin Clementine-Marks

There is no question that the internet has changed our world, connected cultures, and given people incredible opportunities. The most compelling thing is that it does not matter who you come or where you come from-- you can be anyone you want online. The internet gives everyone the same tools, and because of cheap web hosting, the start up costs for a site are minimal. Nearly anyone can be an innovator. With the internet, an entirely new world of opportunity opens up.

Web hosting services basically allow you to rent a piece of the internet. They will host your website-- whether it's a personal blog or portfolio page, an informational site, or the professional web page for a business-- or file uploading and sharing. With the server space you purchase, you can create anything from a single webpage to content management or interactive forums.

But not all web hosting service is the same. There are many aspects to consider, including the price of services, the company's reputation, and the quality of their customer service. There are many companies out there offering web hosting services, but some stand above the rest.

Naturally, the company with the best price will draw the most attention and attract many customers. It is relatively inexpensive to find a place to host a simple personal webpage. Business website hosting, however, gets to be more expensive as their needs are more complex and will draw more traffic.

Customer reviews show the integrity of a company, especially in web hosting. It could be worth a higher rate to have a reliable and honest company providing your services. A company's reputation ought to influence whether or not you choose them.

The last thing you want is to have a problem with your website and not be able to fix it. It is pretty much inevitable that something will go wrong at some point when you're creating and maintaining your website. The level of customer service a web hosting company offers could end up saving you a lot of hassle in sorting out problems with your online endeavors.

As technology continues to become available to more people, the demand for web hosts will only increase. More companies will pop up and competition between them will become more fierce. The future of web hosting is even lower rates and more comprehensive services.

In the world we live in, online presence is imperative to the success of individuals and organizations. Having a web page allows people to reach a wider audience, and allows us to share ideas with new people. Cheap web hosting is fuel to the fire. When cost doesn't impede creation, there is no limit to where we can go with innovation.

How to Choose a Web Host

By Martin Clementine-Marks

I recently decided to start a website for my small business. The vast majority of my business takes place at art and craft fairs so I didn't feel I needed a website at first. As my business started to grow, however, I realized that a website was the next big step for expansion. As I looked for a web host, I learned quite a bit about what you should look for to get the best experience and service.

How much the hosting costs is, of course, usually the first question people ask. This is a very important question but don't assume that cheapest is always best. Not all web hosts are created equal and you don't want to end up with one that is unreliable. Give yourself a budget and be willing to spend it on a trustworthy and high quality host for your website.

Having an understanding of the website you want is key to picking a web host. You need to know how much space you need from the web host to be able to get a price estimate from them. If you are hiring a designer, ask them how much space they expect to need.

If you are building the website yourself or using a software program for storefronts, talk to different web hosts about what their space limits mean in real world terms. For instance, is there a cap on how many visitors can visit the website at one time? What about how many photos you upload? This way, you can determine which host or which hosting plan is right for you.

This will also give a chance to try out their customer service and tech support department. You want to have all kinds of quick and accurate help during a website crisis so evaluating the customer service you receive is important before making a decision.

Along with the quality of tech support, reliability as far as the actual hosting services is paramount to finding a host worth your money. You can look online for reviews of web hosting companies to determine who is most known for having their servers and things of that sort that you want to avoid.

The web host I finally went with got my attention because they have an environmental aspect to their mission. All the power that runs the server my business website is hosted on is produced from renewable resources. Solar panels and wind turbines keep my website and running without hurting the environment.

I am very happy with both my both my web designer and web host company. My website has already started bringing in sales and I couldn't be happier with how it looks and runs. Do your research and ask lots of questions if you want to get the best web hosting services possible..

Free Hosting Services

Free web site hosting is the most basic web hosting service that you can easily get and there are many hosting companies providing free web hosting that are available on the internet. Free hosting services generally contain ads on the pages hosted by customer.

Free web hosting services are extremely limited. If you get a free hosting service you will found ads on the top and the bottom of your web-site and depending on what your web-site is all about, it may not fit at all but for people starting out on the internet it may be the best option if you don't have a lot of traffic or just a small site.

Generally the type of web domain name that you receive when you get a free web hosting is a subdomain with the name that you choose or a name in a directory.

As stated before, if you are a novice and just want to learn, this is the type of hosting account that you would probably want to get but there are some drawbacks to free web hosting if you are looking for more options on the account.

First, many free web hosting accounts do not support database management or what you would call in simple terms, putting data structures on the free web host side of their server. Databases are usually used for online data retrieval routines. Many of these free web hosting sites do not support a common package called mySQL which allows you to program queries into your web sites.

They also don't support multiple e-mail accounts. Most free web hosting service only gives you one email account and it's usually a web based internet account. The host does not include modules for Flash Programming, PHP and Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language (DHMTL).

Free web space provider also has low bandwidth on the internet because of so many people using the free service instead of the paid service. Basically, you also get a free web email account with free hosting services.

Bandwidth is also very important for sites as bandwidth determines how much traffic your site can handle.

Then there is hosting that you pay for that you have more control over when you load and host your web site. You get POP3 mail id and can create as many emails as you want to which depends on the type of account that you pay for.

Every company has special packages for each and every need. From personal to business servers, even servers for special kinds of operating systems (UNIX, Windows, Linux and Apple) the choices vary depending on what you want to do.

The chances are you will not get any server side script support in free hosting, only html pages will be supported. If you need to run php pages, or asp or .net pages you will have to pay the charges.

The prices depend on how much space you need on the server to load your applications so you have to take into consideration what you want to put on the server through your web-site.

In summary, free web hosting is for starter who want an easy hosting option without many hosting features.

If you want to use professional hosting with reliable service and quality support, good uptime, then you should always go for paid hosting provider.
